Each job role within organizations can be viewed much like a “mini-universe”, comprised of the many tasks, skills, and proficiencies required of individuals to become stars in that role. By breaking down a role into these specific tasks and skills, the role’s competencies emerge.
Every job role has one or more competency, which is something you need to be able to do well in a specific job role. In order to demonstrate competence, workers must be able to perform certain tasks or skills with a required level of proficiency. Nursing is no exception, with each of the many nursing roles comprised of competencies. Nursing preceptor and mentor roles have unique competencies. Understanding the unique characteristics between these roles can help nurse learner identify appropriate mentors, while helping nurse educators prepare to succeed in their roles.

● Review the AACN and the APNA resources related to mentorship and precepting and consider the roles at your practicum site and see the similarities and differences. Further consider how the preceptors at your practicum site formally prepared or examine a standard of preparation. How are they prepared?
Post an explanation of the most significant difference between mentors and preceptors and provide your rationale. Then, propose a plan for seeking a mentor and describe strategies for using mentoring to facilitate your professional/career development.
